Spirit of Discovery & Imagination Award – “Spirit of DI”

The Druding Family

The spirit of DI cannot be stopped by rain, snow, sleet, hail or power outage, as this family proves. The pin-packs our champions all enjoy are assembled by hand – one pin of this kind – one of that – one of another – each lovingly placed in a baggie by hand. In the midest of a freak spring snow storm, with our tournament site flooding, our Affiliate Director commented when asked by a parent and Team Manager “how can I help?” – “Gee, how’d you like to put 250 10-pin packs together one pin at a time?” and the answer, unhestiatingly came back – “Sure!”. A few minutes later there they were, in the driveway – ready to pick up the pins and get started packing them! The driveway was so full of snow that they couldn’t even pull in – but that didn’t stop them! Upon arriving home this family discovered that they had no power – no lights, no heat – so they sat down by candlelight, in the dark and cold and put together 250 pin-packs… and when they were done the phone call came and here is what these wonderful people said: ‘The pin-packs are all done, thank you so much for giving us this to do because we had a great time together as a family and team and with no power we would have just wasted the time!” But wait! That’s not all! Jokingly when this family then asked “How else can we help?” I said “well, if you can figure out how I can get all this stuff halfway across the state without having to rent a truck…” they said “We’re on it!” and within minutes the cars and vans were literally stacked up in my driveway! They trudged through the snow to lift and carry heavy boxes and get them delivered safe and sound to the tournament! They are the picture next to “Spirit of DI” in the dictionary! Help me to recognize and show our appreciation for the teamwork, spirit and volunteerism of the Druding Family from Orchard Park, NY.

Here’s what the Team Challenge Appraisers had to say: “In a Challenge known for theatrics, this team’s technical element was amazing! Using PVC piping, IV tubing, an understanding of air pressure and an adjusted train whistle, this team designed an incredibly authentic sound element that was integrated into their performance exceptionally well.

Here’s what the Team Challenge Appraisers had to say: “These talented youngsters completely charmed us and blew us away with the quality of their presentation. Their act was topped off by a young lady with a voice that came straight from heaven! They showed performing skills far beyond their years and we look forward to seeing them on many other stages in the future.

It featured a creative, imaginative pattern of jokes skillfully woven into a captivating raDIo show. The improv new bulletin further demonstrated their sophisticated and playful language skills – outstandingly creative performance!

Here’s what the Instant Challenge Appraisers had to say: “Interestingly, as soon as the Instant Challenge was read the team divided into two separate groups and simultaneously attempted to solve the same Challenge. This individual team member impressed us with the remarkable ability to integrate the very distinct solutions that the team was developing. She continued to liason between both halves of the team and embellish both solutions until they jelled into one. Her poise and composure were evident throughout the entire performance as her team continued to evolve ideas, always integrating every new aspect introduced. We applaud Ally and her very creative problem solving style!
