While thinking of what DI has done for me… – A Poem

While thinking of what DI has done for me I couldn’t help but think in poetry Because like DI this form is quite effective In making a point from a unique perspective I would like to thank the board of the present, future and past For supporting DI and making it last I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have a chance To imagine, create and even sometimes dance While working in groups of up to six others Who through the years became my DI sisters and brothers People I still consider my close friends Even though our seasons have long ago come to an end The time that was used to think, ponder and create Helped inspire me to do something great …

Why Participate in DI? One DI Kid’s College Application Essay

The essay below was written by an 8-year Destination Imagination participant and 5-time Global Finals participant for his college applications. The student is now attending a top engineering school, and credits his acceptance in large part to his experiences in DI. If you ask my friends about what my living room looks like, the defining word would probably be “mess”. They are right — my living room is definitely a mess. However, not all messes are created equal. The mess in my living room is a good mess, one that helps, rather than hinders. Let me take you on a tour of the mess: Without a doubt, it is not an ordinary living room, with a couch, a coffee table, and an ottoman. Yes, technically it …

Instant Challenge Fiesta

I/C Fiestas are non-competitive events where teams solve multiple Instant Challenges in a Tournament-like environment. Teams receive honest constructive feedback from our experienced appraisers about what is working well, and about areas that require improvement in order for the team to excel at Tournament. To enroll in an Instant Challenge Fiesta your team must be fully registered, including payment of any outstanding Team Membership, Affiliate and Regional Fees. Additionally, some regions may charge a dedicated fee for Fiesta attendance. Please note that the Instant Challenge Fiesta is NOT a spectator event. Presentation: Handling Difficult Team Situations

This is a presentation by Josh Diamond designed to help Team Managers learn how to handle tough decisions, behavior issues, and other difficult team situations. It was originally presented on November 29, 2018.

Elevator Pitch

NYDI’s Challenge Experience is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, curiosity and courage through open-ended academic Challenges. We hold tournaments where student teams showcase their solutions to STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Challenges. Our participants build a lifelong confidence in working together to solve any challenge.

Why is the Tournament Scheduled This Way?

Participants often ask us why our Tournaments are scheduled as they are. We receive questions like: Why this date for the Tournament? Why is our performance time so early / so late? Why is there so much / little time between our Team Challenge (TC) and Instant Challenge (IC)? Why can’t the awards ceremony be earlier? Why can’t we have the tournament on multiple days? Why is the tournament enrollment deadline so early? Why can’t I change our performance time a week before the Tournament? So let’s think about what is involved in scheduling a Tournament…

2019-20 Tournament Data Forms

Teams and Team Managers are reminded that there are forms required for every Challenge. The team itself is responsible for the forms, and that in many cases multiple copies of each form are required.  For younger teams the Team Manager may act as scribe, but the content of the forms must be from the team members. Older teams are expected to manage the forms themselves. Destination Imagination Inc. has provided fillable interactive versions of each form.  Teams are encouraged to use these, as appraisers have a limited time in which to read the forms, and legible forms with typed responses are much easier to parse.

SEO for Calendar and Events views

By their nature, the DPCalendar Calendar and Events views have Next and Previous buttons for navigation.   The problem is that when the search engine crawls these pages, it will waste huge amounts of time travelling both into the past and into the future, following the Next / Previous links.  To prevent this: We set Robots: No Index, Follow on all Calendar and Events menu items, which causes  <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, follow” /> to be inclduded in the page header. We add the following to robots.txt: Disallow: /*?*date-start=* Disallow: /*?*date-end=*

Oddities in Intro Text / Intro Image handling

Due to Joomla Issues #9830,  #9865 and #9964, we were seeing some odd behavior when an article was configured to NOT show the intro text in the full article view. Changes from #9865 and #9964 have been manually included in our installation. NOTE: Multiple levels of configuration impact whether the intro text is shown in the article display!Need to check the Show Intro Text setting in all of the following places: The article itself Any menu item which includes the article The category which contains the article The blog / list view containing the article Global settings
