About Rules of the Road
Rules of the Road is your go-to-guide for all of the rules and procedures required to participate in a DI tournament. In Rules of the Road you’ll learn the details of the Challenge Experience, how to prepare for tournaments, and how to ensure your Team Challenge and Instant Challenge solutions fit within the rules. You can download it from the Resource Area.
Pro-tip: Teams may want to assign different sections of Rules of the Road to each team member to review and then discuss together at a team meeting!

Interference
DI solutions are 100% student-driven, meaning only team members may contribute ideas or assist in the creation and development of the Challenge solution… no outside Interference from parents, Team Managers, teachers, or friends allowed! Check your copy of Rules of the Road for full details on what is (and what isn’t!) Interference, or read our quick primer on Avoiding Interference.
Scoring
During a tournament, trained Appraisers evaluate the requirements of your Team Challenge and Instant Challenge solutions. Rules of the Road explains the different categories of scorable elements, and how the Appraisers assess them at a tournament. Appraisers want you to earn every point possible, so make sure to pay close attention to your Challengeโs scoring guidelines!
Team Budget
Each competitive Team Challenge has an assigned budget or expense limit. This budget is the total value of all the materials that are physically included in the teamโs presented solution. Rules of the Road explains how to account for the cost of different types of materials, including which are exempt from inclusion in the Challenge budget, and how to list the value of each item on the required Expense Report form.
