Family and Friends Fun Challenges
It’s holiday time and families are gathering, even if it may be partly online via video conference this year due to COVID-19.
Are you looking for a fun family and friends activity that can be done in the safety of your home and socially distanced? Welcome to our Holiday Activity Challenge! We have three choices of activities that you can do with your family and friends, and all of them are free!
You can choose to…
- create a Make a Better Mouse House Rube Goldberg Device
- solve the Uh Oh! Theatrical Challenge
- create a Why is this so complicated? Rube Goldberg Device in a Story
Can’t decide which to do? Do them all!
There is no fee to participate, and you don’t need a Team Number. These are short simple activities, just for fun!
Once you do the activity, take a video of your solution and post it on YouTube or Vimeo. Submissions must be received by January 2, 2021. All submissions will be considered for a Showcase in early February.

A Team Member or Parent (18 or older) must post your solution to YouTube or Vimeo. in a way that NYDI staff can view the video.

A Rube Goldberg device is a complex machine that is designed to perform a simple task. Your challenge is to create a machine with at least 5 transitions.

THEATRICAL CHALLENGE
We challenge you, your friends, and your family to come up with a short skit and submit your video!
Task: Write and perform a short skit that fits the prompt! Your skit must have a beginning, middle, and end.
Prompt: Something went wrong over the holiday break… uh oh!

RUBE GOLDBERG DEVICE IN A STORY
Create a Rube Goldberg device within a story.
Task: Create a Rube Goldberg device that completes at least 5 tasks, and create a Story. Integrate the Rube Goldberg device with your Story! Your Story must include a Beginning, Middle, and End.
Here is a video with an amazing example of a huge and very device worked into a simple story! Yours doesn’t need to be that complicated — but more tasks and more creative or unique is always better!
