Appointment: Dee Urban has retired as the NYDI Training Director and from the NYDI Board of Trustees. As she retires from the positions of board member and training director, the NYDI community thanks her for the years of dedication and effort “for the kids”. One cannot begin to estimate the magnitude of the impact that her efforts have facilitated for the thousands of students who have participated in NYDI.

Appointment: The NYDI board of trustees has appointed Julia Kumpf as a regional director for the Central Region. Julia is a DI alum from Massachusetts and has been volunteering with NYDI for the past few years. She is currently a graduate student at Cornell University. NYDI is fortunate to have Julia take on the role of regional director for the Central New York Region!

Retirement: Nikki Zea has retired from the NYDI Board of Trustees (BOT). An alumna of NYDI, having participated since she was 8 years old, she has served in DI as a participant, appraiser, manager, coordinator in the university level, writer, and overall supporter and advertiser of DI. She says she is “always in complete awe of the genius that DI kids demonstrate in their solutions.”

NYDI at Woodlawn Adventure Camp

NYDI wishes all the campers from Woodlawn Adventure Camp in Hamburg a fond farewell as school begins next week. To the camp staff, a heartfelt thank you for welcoming NYDI into your camp programming! What a fun time working with these campers as they improved their teamwork and problem-solving skills!

Instant Challenge meets NATO!

First Lieutenant Samantha Turner is the staff engineer in the CJ4, Logistics and Engineering department at the NATO School, Oberammergau (NSO) and a Alumna of New York Destination Imagination. One of her main tasks is to plan and supervise the Air National Guard Troop construction program at the school in the summer. To get the community involved and kids excited, the CJ4 offers a day for NSO staff and faculty members to bring their children in to learn about construction and engineering. This NSO Kids Construction Day was attended by 18 children ranging in age from 2 to 14.

NYDI Outreach in East Aurora

NYDI volunteers met the East Aurora community on Saturday, August 24th at a local shopping plaza. There were two DI activities available: Build a free-standing, weight-bearing tower from cards, toothpicks and marshmallows Construct a bridge for a ping-pong or golf ball to cross made from paper, straws and mailing labels.

Pasta and Gummies Structures!

On Sunday, August 4th, NYDI challenged children attending the Taste of Williamsville to build free-standing structures from pasta and gummies. They were asked to hold a box of raisins or can of tuna with their structures to test the strength. The children made a variety of creative structures, some able to hold multiple cans of tuna!

Appointments Drew Coburn and Joshua Diamond have been appointed to the Destination Imagination of New York, Inc. Board of Trustees (BOT). Drew Coburn has experience as a team manager. He has applied his skills to assist both Destination Imagination, Inc and NYDI with marketing and promotional materials. Drew’s skills and experience are a great addition to the BOT. Joshua Diamond has experience as a team manager and has served as the NYDI Webmaster for the last year. Josh is the treasurer and resident videographer for Croton DI. Western Region DI supports Boston Marathon Solidarity Run

On Sunday, April 21st the people of Buffalo held a run in solidarity with the people of Boston, 6 days after the Marathon Bombings rocked the city and the world. Western Regional NY DI was there to support the run which raised over $21,000 for One Fund Boston and the Red Cross.

NYDI at Nassau PTA Arts in Education

NYDI exhibited at Nassau PTA Arts in Education Showcase on April 8th. Volunteers attended a PTA showcase at The Cradle of Aviation in Nassau and explained the Destination Imagination program to the approximately 300 attendees. PTA leaders and school personnel learned about the various Challenges offered and the Creative Process. Many were intrigued by the blending of requirements for the arts, science and technology within the Challenges.

NYDI meets New York State PTA at Convention

Representatives from NYDI staffed an informational display at the New York State PTA Convention at Saratoga Springs in mid-November. PTA leaders from across the state learned more about the Challenge Program, Creative Process, and about the opportunities which Destination Imagination can provide for their students.

NYDI ProjectOUTREACH Continues!

NYDI ProjectOUTREACH Team Reaches Out; Continues to Fight Childhood Cancer A High School team from Clarence Central School District took on the DI Service Learning Challenge, ProjectOUTREACH last year. This team volunteered in the children’s unit of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. The students taught the patients origami and provided materials to the unit; when the team was not on the unit, other hospital volunteers and staff would utilize the origami kits to keep their small patients busy while undergoing lengthy treatments.

Retirements Dee Urban is retiring as the Affiliate and Western Region Director of Destination Imagination of New York (NYDI). Dee has been the leader and face of Destination Imagination (DI) across New York State for the past twelve years. Dee knows how this program develops the skills in participants to successfully set the course and navigate their futures. Dee’s mantra is “for the kids”. Her focus is always on providing the highest quality experience for the students. Fortunately for NYDI, Dee will continue to volunteer for the program. Directors Message 9/24/2003   As we plan for the year……   Please check our website at http://nydi.org for Team Manager Trainings, Workshops and Regional Tournaments.  Dates and locations are filling in daily. Our State Tournament will be in Binghamton again this year on April 24, 2004 – Union Endicott HS, Endicott, NY. Global Finals will be May 26, – May 29, 2004 – University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  As you can see there is a short time frame between our State Finals and Global Finals – I would strongly suggest you consider some fundraising efforts throughout the season rather than waiting until the end of the year.   It’s much better to be prepared than not!  There is a chance – and I will let you know more when I do – that we might be able to send …

As we all plunge headlong into tournament season crunch time, I didn’t want to let the moment pass without wishing each and every team in New York the very best of luck as they continue the journey! November 2000 Directors Message

Let the fun begin-AGAIN! We attended the first ever Destination Imagination™ Global Finals, D2K, at Iowa State University in Ames this past May, and all we can say is “WOW”!  The energy, enthusiasm and unbridled creativity we saw there was beyond anything we could have imagined!  For four days, Ames was overrun with some of the wackiest, most excited people we’ve ever met.  Hilton Coliseum was full to the rafters and  ROCKED during the Opening Ceremonies as teams from around the world paraded in under their state or national flags.  The video show, laser lights, balloons and wild cheering from teams and their supporters combined to make the night unforgettable.  The next day, competition got underway, and we were running to make it to the …
